Most people don’t like the pain associated with root canals; in fact they want their procedure completed properly, as quickly and as painlessly as possible. In most cases, we can complete your root canal in one visit to our Williamsburg, VA, office. We make sure you are completely comfortable and feel no pain at any time during the procedure. Dr. James Burden and his associate, Dr. Marc Barrett, have completed, between them, thousands of root canal procedure cases. Their aim is to always save the tooth wherever possible and avoid tooth extraction.
A root canal is a pulp-filled cavity in the root of a tooth. A tooth root can have one or more canals in it, depending on the tooth. Molars for example have three roots and can have four or more canals. Root canal treatment is done when the pulp in the canal has become infected or has been damaged irreparably.
At first there may be no signs of infection in the root pulp. However, as the infection progresses, there will be pain and swelling, and in some cases, an abscess forms. An abscess is a pus-filled sac that forms at the end of the tooth roots and causes swelling in the nearby gums. A recurring pimple can also form on the gums. The infected tooth will be extremely sensitive to heat and cold for more than a couple of seconds. It can hurt to bite down on it. There could be discoloration or darkening of the tooth.
Root canals are a common procedure and, with today’s advanced anesthetics, are quite comfortable.
An abscess left untreated will continue to grow and infect the bone around the root of the tooth, spreading into surrounding bone and tissues. The only way to remove the infection completely is by performing a root canal procedure and cleaning out diseased tissue and bacteria inside the pulp chamber and root canals.
When Dr. Burden or Barrett treat your root canal, the pulp of your tooth is gently cleaned out, the canal disinfected and the canals are filled with state-of-the-art sealing material. The sealer we use is biocompatible, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. This makes for faster healing and a strong protective seal against bacteria.
Often a crown needs to be placed over the treated tooth to restore the tooth’s strength. Dr. Burden uses state-of-the-art 3D CAD/CAM design technology to design and mill your crown right in his office. In most cases he can place your permanent crown right after completing your root canal.
