Effective, Minimally Invasive Treatment for Mild to Severe Gum Disease

Dr. Burden prepares to work on a patient.
Dr. Burden utilizes dental lasers to effectively treat gum disease.

At James A. Burden DDS & Associates in Williamsburg, VA, we use a soft-tissue laser for patients with mild to severe gum disease. This revolutionary dental technology results in more thorough, effective gum disease treatment with less post-treatment discomfort and swelling. For severe gum disease treatment, the laser offers a minimally invasive approach.

Am I at Risk for Gum Disease?

There are a number of factors that may put you at risk for gum disease. Of course, poor dental hygiene ranks #1 on the list (and that includes failure to brush or floss and have routine dental check-ups). Other risk factors include:

Dr. Burden focuses on minimally invasive treatment and has helped many patients overcome even the most aggressive gum disease without the use of surgery.

  • Genetics (if your parents had it, you're more likely to)
  • Certain prescription medications (tell Dr. Burden all the medications you take)
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Diseases that impact your immune system

Treating Mild to Moderate Gum Disease

Our staff of caring, friendly, highly-trained hygienists will treat you should your periodontal exam indicate you have mild to moderate gum disease. They use high-tech equipment to treat your gums and when they’re through, they’ll teach you how to keep your gums disease and bacteria-free.

Maximum Comfort and Effectiveness

ultrasonic scalerThe film that can build up on your teeth surface is called “plaque,” made of bacteria and sugars. Regular brushing can get rid of it, but in some cases these deposits can harden into tartar. Tartar and can also form beneath the gum line and irritate gum tissues.

Tartar can’t be removed by regular brushing or flossing – deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, can treat it. Our hygienists use an ultrasonic scaler to gently strip the tartar with ultrasonic sound waves. They then plane the root surface to prevent future tartar buildup. Planing assists the gum to regenerate without irritation and the new gum tissue shrinks and tightens around your teeth, reducing your gum pockets.

Eliminating Bacteria

Arestin LogoBacteria can be found below your gums in pockets that can be treated with a high-tech dental laser followed by antibiotics. We use a soft tissue laser to painlessly remove infected tissue. The laser doubles as a disinfectant since the heat kills the majority of the bacteria on your gums. It also seals your nerve endings and promotes healthy gum regeneration.

Following the removal of the infected area, we use a local antibiotic, which is placed gently below the gum line into the pockets and continues to kill bacteria on a timed-release basis. As needed, we also use systemic antibiotics to prevent your gum disease becoming more severe and requiring some kind of surgery.
